Using citizen science to monitor non-native species: the case of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1855) (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) in Italy

چکیده
Findings of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1855) in Southern Italy have become frequent the last decades. We collected records observations using scientific literature, citizen science programs, and social networks as data sources to create a complete up-to-date dataset. This dataset is made 59 from Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria, Abruzzi regions, 32 which were previously unpublished, spanning 1997 2020. Half these comes biodiversity dedicated Facebook groups, programs online forums, underlining usefulness unconventional gather on species with poorly known distributions. The existence viable populations remains unclear.

Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1855) in Italy: a recent introduction or a natural westward spread? (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Nepomorpha: Belostomatidae).
The paper provides new records and a critical review of the previous citations of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1855) from Italy. The status of the species in Italy, and whether its presence can be related to a recent introduction or to a natural westward spread, is discussed, but further observations are needed to assess its effective status in the country. The dates of description for this spec...
متن کاملSex chromosome pre-reduction in male meiosis of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1854) (Heteroptera, Belostomatidae) with some notes on the distribution of the species
The karyotype and meiosis in males of giant water bug Lethocerus patruelis (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae: Lethocerinae) were studied using standard and fluorochrome (CMA3 and DAPI) staining of chromosomes. The species was shown to have 2n = 22A + 2m + XY where 2m are a pair of microchromosomes. NORs are located in X and Y chromosomes. Within Belostomatidae, Lethocerus patruelis is unique in show...
متن کاملUsing citizen science to monitor pollination services
1. Pollination by insects is a vital ecosystem service and the need for its assessment is increasing in recognition and political pressure, but there are currently no large-scale systematic monitoring schemes in place to measure the direct provision of this service. 2. This study tested a protocol for using a citizen science approach to quantify pollination service provision in gardens and allo...

متن کاملThe first finding of (TTAGG)n telomeric repeat in chromosomes of true bugs (Heteroptera, Belostomatidae)
Using the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), the presence of (TTAGG)n telomeric sequence was detected in the chromosomes of Lethocerus patruelis (Stål, 1854) belonging to the family Belostomatidae (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha). This sequence was exclusively present at the ends of chromosomes in this species. This is the first evidence of the insect-type TTAGG telomeric repeats in Heteroptera.
